Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been out of the Indian team since the conclusion of India’s tour of West Indies as he was diagnosed with stress fractures to his lower back and has been in rehabilitation since then. He had consulted specialists in London and avoided surgery. He is slated to be back in Indian colours for their upcoming tour to New Zealand next year.
His injuries have been attested to his awkward action which enables him to bowl at over 140 kph regularly despite not having a regularly long runup for a fast bowler. Many former fast bowlers and experts have mentioned this fact that his action puts a lot of stress on his legs and lower back and had predicted that he might get injured frequently. This has now been agreed by perhaps the greatest fast bowler produced by India, Kapil Dev.
Kapil Dev feels a bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar will last long
Kapil Dev had a beautiful lengthy runup with classic side-on action and he holds the distinction of not missing a single Test match in his career of 131 matches from 1978 to 1994 due to any injury. In fact, he took painkilling injections and medicines to help India win a Test match against Australia Down Under during the 1981 series.
Jasprit Bumrah picked 62 wickets in just 12 Test matches, picking five-wickets hauls in South Africa, England, Australia and West Indies, including a hat-trick in the Jamaica Test. He also has 103 ODI and 51 T20I wickets to his name in his short but amazing international career. Kapil stressed the importance of technique for bowlers saying a sound technique will help create a ‘bigger impact’.
“If your bowling action is technically sound you make a bigger impact. See what happened to (Jasprit) Bumrah, his action attracts injuries. He uses his arm more than the body, so that can be a problem. A bowler like Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) will last longer because he uses his body,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by News 18.
Kapil Dev also said that Indian bowlers are guilty of bowling short in places like Australia and New Zealand apart from other overseas venues. He felt that on seeing bouncy wickets, they forget line and length and felt that Mohammed Shami was the biggest culprit of doing that.
