The just-concluded second Test between India and West Indies saw two remarkable individual performances from Hanuma Vihari and Jasprit Bumrah. While Vihari impressed with the bat, Bumrah lit up Jamaica with his stunning bowling display. And while one really should not undermine Vihari’s impressive knocks, one can say that Bumrah has been getting more attention. However, for Vaishnavi Vihari, sister of Hanuma Vihari, her brother’s ton has not been overshadowed by Bumrah’s six-fer.
In the first innings of the game, Vihari scored his maiden Test century. The right-handed batsman scored 111 to help India pile up 416 – their highest total in the series. Vihari showed remarkable composure as he stitched important partnerships with lower-order batsmen to put the team on top.
Bumrah then made a huge mark with the ball to hog all the limelight. He picked up the first five West Indies wickets in a blink of an eye including a hat-trick to put India in the driver’s seat. Bumrah went on to finish the innings with six wickets as India bowled out West Indies for just 117.
‘Special day for both’
While the world is busy discussing whose impact was greater in the game, Vihari’s sister feels otherwise. Vaishnavi thinks that both Bumrah and her brother had enjoyed the special day and put India in a strong position.
“I don’t think Bumrah’s bowling has overshadowed my brother’s ton. It was a special day for both of them. Both played well and put India in a commanding position. I am very happy and emotional. I watched the match and I don’t miss his batting, especially whenever and whatever time it is for me here,” she told Deccan Chronicle.
Vaishnavi further spoke about Vihari dedicating the century to his late father. He was just twelve when he lost his father and made sure to remember him on his special day. “My brother has dedicated his first Test hundred to our late father. He would be a proud father. Wherever he is he must be very happy and very emotional.”
“Our father was ex superintendent engineer in Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. He was very sweet kind-hearted, not a strict kind of father. He used to have happy tears looking at my brother at age 12 when he hits 50 or takes three wickets. From yesterday, I was very emotional thinking how would my father feel now if he is with us,” she said.
India, meanwhile, thrashed West Indies by 257 runs in the second Test to win the series 2-0. After setting an improbable target of 468, India bowled out the hosts for just 210.
