After winning the five matches T20 International series 3 games to 2, England was flying high on their tour of New Zealand. Their spirits were high especially after winning the final game of the T20I series when the series was tied at 2-2. They won that thriller in a super over. This brought back the salty memories of this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup for both the side where the hosts England beat well-deserving New Zealand again in a super over.
The swinging conditions of New Zealand were about to suit the experienced English bowlers more than the New Zealanders. So, everyone expected England to draw the series if not win it. But when the series started, England bowlers were toiled hard, especially the fast bowlers. Only experienced Stuart Broad was able to extract some juice from the otherwise flat decks. Eventually, the host won the series 1-0.
Jofra Archer slams defective speed guns from the first Test at Bay Oval
There were high expectations from young Jofra Archer who was playing his first away Test series after his heroics in his debut Ashes back home. He caused troubles to almost every Australian batsman in that series where they drew the five-match series (2-2) eventually. But, over here in New Zealand, he was looking an inexperienced rookie bowler which technically he is.
In the two-match series against the Kiwis, Archer took only a couple of wickets at an average of over 100 which are way poor stats compared to his outstanding performances in Ashes 2019. The Barbados born young bowler was quite unhappy and frustrated with his performance. But this behaviour was quite common as this was the very first series failure for him since his international debut.
Now, Archer has revealed the cause of his poor bowling. According to him, the speed gun at Mount Maunganui was the main issue. Writing for his blog in the Daily Mail he said, “In case you’re wondering, I’m still not convinced about the speed gun. I felt it didn’t have its best game at Mount Maunganui, and I came away from Hamilton thinking the same. Not just me – all the bowlers were made to look a bit slower than I believe they really are.”
