Jofra Archer has had a fairy-tale run ever since he was fast-tracked into the England national team. The Barbados-born was the Three Lions’ leading wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup and was then given the chance of playing Test cricket where he hasn’t disappointed by any means. The youngster is currently a part of the high-voltage Ashes versus Australia and has ruffled many feathers.
The fast bowler has drawn a lot of appreciation and even Michael Vaughan, the former English cricketer, said that Archer will end his career with at least 400 Test wickets. He made his Test debut at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, replacing James Anderson. In the very next encounter at the Headingley in Leeds, the seamer raced away to his maiden five-wicket haul in the format.
In the meantime, it has been learned that Archer is set for a massive pay rise next month and that will make him one of the highest-paid cricketers in the country. As per reports in The Times, Archer will be awarded a central contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) worth around one million pounds. Archer already receives 800,000 pounds from the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
Ben Stokes also set to enter the one million club
It’s been known that the cricket board will hand the Test and limited-overs contracts to Archer in early October. A new five-year broadcast deal kicks in next year and it’s expected to boost Test contracts from 475,000 pounds to 650,000 pounds and white-ball contracts from 17,000 pounds to 250,000 pounds. The hike means that Archer, along with Ben Stokes, will top one million.
Stokes has also been a part of the Royals in the T20 tournament in India. Archer and Stokes will be able to play most of the games in the next year’s IPL as England are scheduled to start their journey on June 4 with a Test versus the West Indies. Interestingly, the 24-year-old was a part of the West Indies in his Under-19 playing days and shifted base to England only a few years ago.
For the time being, Archer’s focus will be to help the Brits win the prestigious Ashes in the fourth Test itself at the Old Trafford in Manchester. His bouncers have been a problem for many, including Steve Smith, who developed a concussion due to the delivery at the Home of Cricket in London.
