One of the great traditions that have been in place in the Indian Cricket team in the past decade or so, is that every time the sides’ win a series or a tournament, the youngest or the newest member of the outfit is handed over the winners’ trophy and is allowed to take centre stage as his more-celebrated teammates bask in glory on the sidelines.
It all started when Mahendra Singh Dhoni took over the reins of the Indian Cricket Team in 2007. Rewind and have a look at each of the triumphs that Team India affected during Dhoni’s leadership.
Whether it is the 2007 T20 World Cup win or the 2011 World Cup heist or the victory at the 2013 Champions Trophy or any other series win, you won’t find Dhoni or any other senior cricketer taking centre stage and bask in the glory; it is always the newcomers or the youngest member of the squad who is given the coveted opportunity.
Virat Kohli has taken forward the tradition after he took over the leadership duties from Dhoni and another example of it was on full display when the Indian captain handed over the winners’ trophy of the India-Bangladesh Test series to uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat.
KS Bharat opens up on the moment when Virat Kohli handed him the winners trophy
The uncapped wicketkeeper, Bharat, was roped in as a cover for the incumbent Wriddhiman Saha. Speaking about the moment when Virat Kohli handed him the trophy, Bharat said he was taken aback when Kohli told him that it was a small gesture of welcoming him in the team; something Bharat feels was a great moment for him as well as his parents.
“Virat bhaiya walked up to me and just put the Trophy in my hands. I didn’t know how to react and what to say. Then Virat bhaiya told me it’s a small gesture of welcoming you in the team. Enjoy it. Then came Rohit bhaiya who was standing next to me. He told me to enjoy the moment. He said it is your time to enjoy and feel it. I was very nervous but was very happy the way they treated me. My parents were very happy and proud seeing me with the Trophy”, Bharat was quoted as saying by The Asian Age.
According to Bharat, this was a moment that he would never forget while also alluding to the fact that how such gestures will proceed to motivate him and other youngsters.
“I can never forget this moment in my life. Sharing the dressing room and also learning this…It will motivate me a lot as a young player and I am sure many more youngsters will be motivated”, Bharat concluded.
