The way the team management has handled spin twins Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in recent months, it has been really baffling. Not very long ago, both the players were an indispensable part of the limited-overs team and rightly so. They were one of the main reasons why India won ODI series in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia as well as T20I series in England in the last couple of years.
Their performance at home has been equally impressive. But in recent times, the team management dropped them on a number of occasions as they tried out different spinners, much to everyone’s surprise. Kuldeep and Chahal have not played a T20I together since the Cardiff match against England in 2018.
They have also not bowled together since the end of the World Cup. In fact, they were recently named in the T20I squad together for the first time since the World Cup ended in July. But they still did not bowl together. While Chahal played the first two games against West Indies while Kuldeep was recalled for the final game to replace the leggie.
Bharat Arun on spin twins
Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are a part of the upcoming ODI series against West Indies too. It would be interesting to see whether India give them a chance to bowl together or not. And ahead of the series, India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun has stated that Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will play together in conditions that are conducive for spin bowling weighed in on how Ravindra Jadeja provides the balance to the team.
“We were looking at an ideal combination which gives absolute balance to the team,” Arun said ahead of the ODI series. “Also there was an option, where we could use Jadeja as an all-rounder. So that really helped us and yes, there may be occasions when there are conducive conditions both can be playing together. But we will have to look at the overall balance before we decide the team.
“If you can bat in ODI and T20 cricket, it will give us a different dimension. You should be exceptional in at least two skills. If they can bat, it lends a lot more balance to the team. But as it is, Kuldeep and Chahal can be matchwinners on their day. When it comes to matchwinners, you forego the other aspects. They can win you matches just by one skill alone,” he added.
India, meanwhile, will be looking to continue their winning run in ODIs too after winning the T20I series 2-1. The three-match series will start in Chennai on Sunday (December 15).
