Sri Lanka made a strong comeback to form after a disappointing World Cup in England and Wales by hammering Bangladesh 3-0 in an ODI series at home. After winning the first two matches by 91 runs and 7 wickets, the islanders thumped the Tigers in the dead rubber by 122 runs on Wednesday. Veteran batsman Angelo Mathews was picked as the man of the match in the third ODI for scoring 87 runs and also the player of the series. Mendis also had a good series with a couple of the 40s and a fifty.
However, the hosts had an embarrassing moment after the day-night match played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Their middle-order batsman Kusal Mendis, who also scored fifty in the match, was seen riding one of the two motorcycles that were presented in the post-match presentation.
As Mendis and his mate vroomed with the two-wheeler around the ground, he lost control of it and skidded. The security personnel present nearby rushed to the rescue of the duo and fortunately, neither of them got injured and both got on their feet soon. A video of the incident also went viral.
Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh in the match and also series
Earlier in the match, Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat and the hosts came up with a powerful batting display. While Mathews and Mendis scored quick half-centuries, Karunaratne (46) and Kusal Perera (42) also chipped in with runs to power Sri Lanka’s total to 294 for 8 in 50 overs. For Bangladesh, Shafiul Islam and Soumya Sarkar took three wickets each.
Bangladesh were in all sorts of trouble chasing the target and lost half their side for only 83. It was Sarkar’s 69 and No.9 batsman Taijul Islam’s quickfire 39 not out that gave their score some form of respectability. Yet, the visitors were all out for only 172 in 36 overs. Dasun Shanaka took three wickets.
Sri Lanka dedicated the win in the third ODI to Nuwan Kulasekara, the fast bowler who recently decided to quit cricket. This series also saw the departure of veteran pacer Lasith Malinga who retired after the first ODI.
