Pakistan has been an isolated destination for international cricket since the 2009 terrorist attack in which gunmen targetted a Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, leaving several cricketers injured. The Pakistan Cricket Board have tried to convince Sri Lankan cricket board to bring back international cricket to Pakistan. It was a major blow when 10 Sri Lankan players pulled themselves out of the Pakistan tour, but now Sri Lankan stand-in ODI captain Lahiru Thirimanne has given a bit of relief to cricket fans board in Pakistan.
Pakistan hosted very few international matches after a horrific attack that took place in 2009. Since then, PCB has shifted its home games to the UAE. Since 10 years, this is the first time that any nation has taken the step to play full limited-overs series on Pakistan soil.
Sri Lankan stand-in skipper pretty happy with the security
Sri Lankan stand-in ODI captain Lahiru Thirimanne looked fully satisfied with the security of Pakistan, “SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) has presented us the security plan which we are getting in Pakistan so I’m pretty happy with that and I explained to my family as well, so they don’t have a concern since we represent our country,” Thirimanne said as quoted by Gulf News.
He looked pretty confident over the performance of the Sri Lankan team, after the main players which were missing on their away tour “But still we have a good team. I believe if we play to our potential we can do very well” added the Sri Lankan skipper.
Sri Lanka is scheduled to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and as many T20Is in Pakistan. The ODIs will take place in Karachi on September 27, September 29 and October 2, while T20I matches will be held in Lahore on October 5, 7 and 9.
Recently, Sri Lankan Cricket released a media statement, revealing that 10 top Lankan players are set to miss the Pakistan tour, “Accordingly, the following players chose to stay away from the upcoming Pakistan series – Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Janith Perera, Dhananjaya De Silva, Thisara Perera, Akila Dhananjaya, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Suranga Lakmal, Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne.”
