The Coronavirus outbreak has put the fate of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It has been deferred until April 15 at the moment and the possibilities of the tournament even happening this year are slim with India under the lockdown until the same date. The window for the IPL to take place is also short now. However, Rohit Sharma feels that everything can wait until life gets back to normal.
Lockdown has forced almost everyone, let alone cricketers, to turn to social media to spend time. And the Indian cricketers, Rohit and Yuzvendra Chahal, who gel along well on and off the field took to Instagram to chat live with each other. During the live session, the leggie asked the former about the fate of the IPL this year and Rohit was quick to say that the cash-rich league can wait as country comes first.
“We should first think about the country. The situation needs to get better first then we can talk about the IPL. Let life get back to normal first,” he said.
Rohit Sharma is glad to spend time with his family
Rohit Sharma also pointed out at the roads in Mumbai wearing deserted look stating that he has never seen his city like this before. “I haven’t seen Bombay like this before,” the 32-year-old told Chahal while showing him the empty roads standing in the balcony.
However, India’s limited-overs vice-captain is glad that this break has allowed the cricketers to spend time with their family. “As cricketers, we don’t get time with family. So much of tours and cricket is there. This is a time to spend with them and loads of it,” Rohit further added.
As far as international cricket is concerned, every bilateral series and tournament has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Even the India-South Africa ODI series had to be cancelled with the virus spreading very fast in the country and across the world. Rohit Sharma wasn’t picked for the series as he was still recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained during the T20I series in New Zealand.
