In a must-win clash against the West Indies, the Indian opener Rohit Sharma stepped up for the occasion with a big hundred. Rohit smashed 159 from 138 deliveries with 17 fours and five sixes helping India finish on 387/5 after they were invited to bat first. The 32-year-old started off slowly and struggled to get going in the first half of the innings. However, he accelerated in the last 20 overs. Rohit shared a record 227-run partnership with KL Rahul from only 37 overs.
Here are the records and numbers that Rohit Sharma created during his 159-run knock in Vizag:
1 – Rohit Sharma became the first opener in International cricket to smash ten centuries in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Graeme Smith in 2005 and David Warner in 2016 scored 9 tons apiece while opening the innings.
Rohit is also only the 4th Indian with 10+ International hundreds in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar struck a record 12 tons in 1998 while Virat Kohli had 11 hundred apiece in 2017 and 2018. Rahul Dravid also hit 10 centuries in Internationals in 1999.
1 – Rohit now has seven centuries in ODI cricket in 2019; all against different oppositions.
