India cricketer and Punjab Ranji skipper Mandeep Singh has become the first active player to support the farmers in the ongoing protest against the new legislation. The new farm laws have not welcomed by the farmers and the support for them is pouring in from different parts of the country.
Mandeep Singh and his elder brother Harvinder Singh visited the Singhu Border and expressed their solidarity with the farmers. He was sad to see their condition as well and saluted their spirit. The 28-year-old also hoped that the issue is resolved as soon as possible.
“I went there to show my support to all the senior citizens, who are peacefully protesting in this biting cold. It is heart-breaking to see the conditions in which they are living. Tractors have become their new home, but they are not complaining. They are so happy and cheerful. I salute their spirit. It was a humbling experience for me.
“The whole country runs on the work done by farmers, and the issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible,” Mandeep Singh said while speaking to the Times of India.
My father would’ve also joined the protest, says Mandeep Singh
Mandeep Singh lost his father during the 13th edition of the Indian Premier league (IPL) when he was in the UAE with the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). He couldn’t travel back home but played a match-winning knock of 66 runs against KKR paying a tribute to his father. Speaking about him, Mandeep stated his father would’ve also joined the protest if he was alive.
“If my father would have been alive, he would have also joined the protest. He must be a proud father because his sons did their bit,” he further said. In the end, Mandeep Singh hoped that the government listens to farmers’ demand which will eventually put a full stop to this protest.
“I have never experienced anything like that in my entire life. It was soul satisfactory. It has moved me. I hope the government will listen to their demand, and all of them will be back to their loved ones,” he concluded.
