Former Australian greats Michael Hussey and Shane Warne lashed out at the ones, who abused Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah during the third day’s play of the Sydney Test between Australia and India. Even as there’s been some jaw-dropping cricket being played at the SCG, unwanted controversies seemed to have overshadowed it to quite some extent.
The incident was termed as ‘insulting’ by the Indian team. Hussey stated that the visiting team don’t deserve to be treated in such a humiliating manner. Warne, the first bowler to claim 700 Test wickets, came down heavily on the culprits, saying that the ones guilty deserve to be punished.
Disgraceful to be honest, absolutely disgraceful: Shane Warne
“It’s terrible behaviour and I can’t believe it’s still happening in this day and age. The Indians have come here to our shores to entertain us, play some great cricket, we should be so grateful that we can watch some live sport. To treat the players like that is unacceptable,” Hussey was quoted as saying in Fox Sports.
“Disgraceful to be honest, absolutely disgraceful. Should never happen, especially what’s happened in the last 12 months or so with everything else around the world. Let’s hope they come down heavy and find the culprits,” Warne said.
Earlier, Fox Sports commentator Mark Howard was clear cut in saying that the wrongdoers should never be allowed to visit cricket grounds in the future.
“Something not condoned, disgusting to be completely honest. If it’s proven correct and there are members of the crowd that have been racially abusing anyone on the ground or in the crowd you’re just not welcome at the cricket and you should never be allowed to come to the cricket again,” Howard said.
After the controversy broke out on the third day, a similar incident took place on the fourth day as well. During the dying stages of the post-lunch session, Siraj, yet another time, complained to the umpires of racial abuses.
The match officials, umpires and security officials thereafter investigated the matter. In the end, six spectators were evicted from the venue on an immediate basis. India are chasing 407 runs to win the third Test and take a 2-1 lead.
