It’s been a while since MS Dhoni relinquished his leadership duties but we still can’t help but discuss, marvel or rank him as one of the greatest in white-ball cricket the world has ever seen. Social Media goes berserk, even the pundits can’t help themselves in marveling at the genius of a leader that MS Dhoni was.
Former England captain and one of the prime orchestrators of the 2005 Ashes series win Michael Vaughan bored no exception to it. When asked about who he thought was the best International captain of his era, Vaughan picked out many names but alluded that MS Dhoni is the “best white-ball captain I’ve ever seen.”
The former English captain and a regular on social media, Michael Vaughan also went on to hail Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson for his calm-and-collected approach and the way he led his side all the way to the finals of the 2019 World Cup.
“Kane Williamson is outstanding. has the gift to lead without having to say too much. He can maneuver his team in a sensible way and not a noisy way. Everyone realizes he is the leader, the power,” Vaughan was quoted by the Times of India.
“MS Dhoni is also great with the bat”
Vaughan also talked about how the inspired leadership of Eoin Morgan was one of the cornerstones of England finally winning the World Cup but still rated Dhoni as the greatest white-ball captain of his era.
“Eoin Morgan was a revelation in 50-over cricket. MS Dhoni doesn’t do international captaincy anymore but in our era, Dhoni is the best white-ball captain I have seen…the way he maneuvers from behind the stump just reads the play, thinks out of the box, handles the pressure card and is also great with the bat,” the former English captain said.
And, it is very hard to argue with Vaughan. Apart from all the titles that he won: T20 World Cup 2007, 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, three IPL’s and one Champions League, what made Dhoni different from his predecessors or even his successors was his ability to stay calm under intense pressure; a quality that allowed him to regularly pull a rabbit out of the hat when the opposition was least expecting.
Vaughan also heaped praise on Virat Kohli– The Test captain for his exuberance, energy and his ability to perform with the bat despite the scrutiny of leadership. “In Tests, Virat Kohli is busy, energetic, a brilliant batsman, full of life. I like the way he captains,” Vaughan added.
