Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, is arguably one of the greatest batsmen the country has ever produced. To start with, he came into the limelight after winning the 2008 U19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. In the same year, the talented batter was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the inaugural edition of the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL).
Then he went on to don the India jersey as well in an ODI against Sri Lanka. From there on, he hasn’t looked back and has kept growing in stature with the progress of his career. In the beginning, he stamped his authority in the ODI and T20I format, scoring centuries at will and with sheer authority. However, the Delhi-born took a while to find his feet in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli marching ahead
But once he got the measure of the format, he started wielding magic. He also has played in as many as three World Cups in 2011, 2015 and 2019. In fact, in 2019, he was the skipper of the Men in Blue and took them to the semi-finals. The only palpable blot in his career is that he doesn’t have an ICC trophy under his belt. On a number of times, India have fallen apart in the knockouts.
Virat is the only batsman in the world with an average in excess of 50 in all the three formats. In the IPL, he has been a stalwart for the RCB for over a decade, though he hasn’t been able to give his team a single title. Virat is currently 31 and already has plethora of records under his belt.
Going ahead, he is speculated to take down a number of other records. In the ODI format, he is ever so close to Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 49 ODI tons. Last year, he also crossed Don Bradman’s tally of Test runs. On six instances in his career, he became the leading run-scorer in a calendar year.
In the meantime, a fan asked Mitchell McClenaghan, the New Zealand fast bowler, a question about Virat. The supporter asked the speedster to describe the Indian captain in one word. Reply to the same, the seamer used the world ‘Class’ and it shouldn’t spring a surprise, bearing in mind Virat’s stupendous numbers at the highest level.
