India’s excellent all-round effort won them the game and the series against the Kiwis at the Seddon Park, Hamilton. Thanks to the superb last over by Mohammed Shami and the batting master class of Rohit Sharma which gave India hope before the latter sealed the game with two consecutive sixes in the Super Over.
This game was one of those nail biters for the cricket fans as it went to the wire, still, it wasn’t like the 2019 World Cup final as India chased down the 18-run target given to them in the super over. Batting first, India scored a fighting total of 179 runs, thanks to the brilliant 65-run knock from the hitman Rohit Sharma. Still, it was a tough total to defend but the New Zealand side had the likes of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, and Colin Munro.
When it came to chasing down the target, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson took the charge as he played an almost match-winning knock for the Kiwis, but a brilliant 20th over by Mohammed Shami saw the game to go on the wire, as both the teams scored 179 each at the end of 20 overs.
It was Mohammed Shami’s over that won us the game: Rohit Sharma
Cometh the hour, cometh the man, India was given a target of 18 runs to win the game and the series in the Super Over, as Kane Williamson again scored 11 off 4 balls to take his team’s score to 17. But what followed, will be remembered by all cricket fans for a long, long time.
India came out with their opening duo of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma once again, this Indian pair scored only 8 runs in the first four deliveries off Tim Southee. Rohit Sharma was on the strike when the team needed 10 if the final two deliveries and as anticipated by the crowd, he ended up hitting both of them for consecutive sixes as India sealed the series with two games to spare.
After the game, the man of the moment Rohit Sharma took to Twitter to come up with a tweet. He tweeted, “Seriously, what a game! @MdShami11’s over won us the game. Valiant effort from Williamson though.”
