Virat Kohli has been leading Team India across the formats for quite some time. He has done extremely well while at the helm and his record suggests the same. Recently, the 30-year-old went past the likes of MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly after winning the Test series in the West Indies. But he is also criticised by many for various reasons and one of those is the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir.
According to Gambhir, the reason behind Kohli’s success as a captain of team India is because he has players like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni up his sleeve. He also added that the efficiency of one’s captaincy is actually put to test when you lead a franchise in the IPL. Virat Kohli recently led India to the semi-final in the recently concluded World Cup in England.
Gambhir points out Kohli’s captaincy flaws in IPL
In IPL, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are the two most successful captains ever winning the trophy four and three times respectively. But Virat Kohli is yet to win the cash-rich league even once and has been found wanting at times while taking decisions at crunch times.
“Still a long way to go for him. Kohli was very good in the last World Cup but he has a long way to go. He captains so well in international cricket because he has got Rohit Sharma, he had MS Dhoni for a long time. Captaincy credentials are noticed when you are leading a franchise when you do not have other players supporting you,” Gambhir said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Gautam Gambhir also felt India’s limited-overs vice-captain is too good a player to benched in Tests and should open the innings in the red-ball format. “I think KL Rahul has been given a longer run. It is time for Rohit Sharma to open the batting in Test cricket. If you pick him in the squad, he has to be a part of the playing XI. If he does not fit your playing XI, no point in picking him in the squad of 15 or 16. He is too good a player to be sitting on the bench,” the former cricketer added.
