MS Dhoni, the veteran Indian cricketer has certainly changed the face of Team India. He himself has turned into a big brand, who holds a massive fan following across the globe. However, his journey to glory from being an orthodox wicketkeeper to being the best in the world was not easy. He used to struggle a lot during his early days in international arena. And Kiran More who was the selector when Dhoni made his India debut has thrown light over the same.
More, at that time, had the choice of many wicketkeepers, who were making their name in the domestic cricket. The likes of Parthiv Patel, Dinesh Karthik and many more were in the line. MS Dhoni was also one of them, who was a good but technically not sound batsman. However, the former Indian selector saw something special in him then and picked him and the rest is history.
Kiran More talks about MS Dhoni’s skills when he began playing for Team India
Kiran More said that MS Dhoni had some big issues at the beginning of his career but he worked very hard to overcome his weaknesses. As per him, the Jharkhand’s wonder boy’s determination helped him in improving his game with each passing day.
“We saw the talent in him. But his ability to work hard and improve made him what he is. He had some problems when he started out. Questions were asked about his wicket-keeping skills. However, he worked very hard on his game and kept getting better with every game,” Kiran More said as quoted by India Today.
The 57-year-old recited that Dhoni first played in limited-overs format and later on he was picked in the Test team. He also recalled that the longest format challenged the wicketkeeper-batsman and then he improved his game. According to More, no one can judge a player’s ability in just three or four games. So, the panel decided to give him more chances although he failed to perform well in the beginning.
“He played one-days and then went on to play Test cricket. Test cricket came up with a lot of challenges. He realized he had to do a lot of hard work to play Test cricket and that helped his wicketkeeping skills. We wanted to give him more chances. You can’t judge a player from just 3-4 games,” Kiran More added.
