The 2019-20 season of the Ranji Trophy finally got underway on Monday (December 09th). A plethora of four-day fixtures were played across the length and breadth of the country and we saw pulsating cricket that spanned from great batting, unplayable bowling spell, collapse, dominating performances and some dissent against the umpire’s decision.
Tamil Nadu kickstarted their campaign against the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Champions Karnataka in Dindigul when former Indian opener has been fined ten per cent of his match fee for showing dissent against the decision of the on-field umpire.
The incident happened during 70the over of the Karnataka innings when ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and other Tamil Nadu appealed vociferously against Pavan Deshpande before it was turned down by the on-field umpire Nitin Pandit. Disappointed with the decision, nearly all the Tamil Nadu fielders and Ashwin surrounded the pitch before umpire Nitin Pandit walked up to the champion Indian spinner for a chat.
Meanwhile, the umpire standing at square-leg, Anil Dandekar too tried to calm down an angry Vijay by holding his hand

This was not the only decision that went against Tamil Nadu on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy fixture against Karnataka, leaving a plethora of players including N Jagadeesan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay aggrieved and disappointed with the same.
Speaking about the match in general, Karnataka batted first and on the back of half-centuries from Devdutt Padiakkal (78 off 182 balls) who continued his great run-of-form from the white-ball tournaments, a 78-ball 43 from Mayank Agarwal and a patient half-century from Pavan Deshpande (65 off 142 ball) finished the day at 6-259 in 94 overs.
For Tamil Nadu, Manimaran Siddarth (13-4-33-2) was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed crucial wickets of Mayank Agarwal (43) and wicketkeeper-batsman Sharath BR (10 off 35 balls). Deshpande, against whom the appeal was turned down, was eventually gobbled by Ravi Ashwin for 65 after N Jagadeesan caught the batsman safely.
