Murali Vijay has played a number of decent knocks for India in Tests. However, for the time being he is not into the selectors’ scheme of things after getting dropped from the team during the tour of Australia last year. At the age of 35, time is running out for the veteran. With the likes of Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw being seen for the future, things don’t look pleasant for Vijay.
His average in 2018 was a mere 18.8, compared to his overall average of 38.28. Vijay is now set to ply his trade for Somerset in their last three matches of the County Championship. He was roped in as a replacement of Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali. As far as his Team India comeback is concerned, Vijay isn’t bothered about it. Rather he wants to focus on his passion of playing at the higher level.
“I play cricket just for pride and sheer passion for it. I do not look forward to playing for India or world level. My funda is to play cricket at a higher level. So, any cricket is good for me and I am looking forward to contributing to the teams I play for,” Vijay was quoted as saying in India Today.
“This is what I have done over a period of 15 years. So, obviously, nothing changes in that aspect of it. But obviously, opportunities create more experience and I am looking forward to one,” Vijay stated. He recently played the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) for the Ruby Trichy Warriors and ended the tournament with scores of 101, 99, 78* and 81.
I do not put any limitations on my dream, says Vijay
Last year, Vijay played for Essex in the County Championship and turned up with a century in his very first appearance. Prior to that, he had a couple of horrendous outings, scoring 26 runs at 6.50 against England at the Edgbaston and Lord’s. However, Vijay isn’t fussed by the situation since he has made quite a number of comebacks after getting sidelined.
“Of course, I am saying that I do not put any limitations on my dream. I have given four comebacks and there is no pressure. I know how to do that and I want to contribute in whichever team I play for. I want to make the team win and also get the youngsters in the right mindset,” he added.
