On Friday, the Supreme Court allowed the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) to hold elections to elect office bearers. Following the development, it has been learned that the club representatives want Rupa Gurunath, N Srinivasan’s daughter, to take the charge as the new TNCA president. If it happens, then she’ll be the first woman to become the president of a state association of the BCCI.
For the time being, she doesn’t face much of a challenge as there are no names being floated from any other camp. It’s been known that the club representatives want Srinivasan’s legacy to continue and that’s why they insisted that Rupa, who’s also the whole-time director of India Cements, takes over at the state association. They also wish for Srinivasan’s legacy to continue.
“Even though she is a newcomer to cricket politics, Rupa is extremely hands-on when it comes to cement business. She is a chip off the old block and we believe she will be up for the challenge,” a source privy to the developments was quoted as saying in The Times of India (TOI).
As per reports, Rupa’s name is likely to be announced in the Executive Committee Meeting of TNCA on Monday. And if things go according to plans then she’ll file her nomination on Tuesday. Rupa, the wife of former CSK owner Gurunath Meiyappan, isn’t completely an unknown quantity in cricket circles, though she hasn’t been a part of direct cricket administration.
Nothing will be imposed upon TNCA members
“Rupa knows the BCCI bigwigs very well and given her track record as a top boss of India Cements, she will be quite a force in the new scheme of things. And the fact that the TNCA old guard will be there to help her, it shouldn’t be a problem for her to run the ship,” the source stated.
When questioned about how the seniors in the association will react on Rupa’s promotion, the TNCA top-brass said that “she will only become the president if the members want it”. “Nothing will be imposed upon members. If Rupa becomes TNCA chief, it will be because the members want it,” a source mentioned.
The members are happy as they will now be able to conduct the elections. Moreover, the TNCA brass sounded delighted by the fact that the Supreme Court has also allowed the association to have an extra assistant secretary.
