Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that the national cricketers won’t be having sort of training camp before the month of August. Back in March, Indian cricket came to a halt after their home ODIs against South Africa had to be shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Indian Premier League (IPL) had to be indefinitely postponed as well.
If the tournament doesn’t happen then the BCCI could end up incurring some huge losses. Their series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe couldn’t take place either. The cricketers have been spending their time in lockdown with their family, though a few of them have returned to the park. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma have already started practising.
Lots of thinking to do for Sourav Ganguly and Co
Now as per reports in ABP news, there’s no chance for the Indian players to take part in any camp until August. In the meantime, the BCCI is trying its best to host the IPL sometime later this year. If reports are to be believed, the T20 event is set to get underway on September 26. The board is also waiting for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take a call on the T20 World Cup later this year in Australia.
The T20 World Cup is set to start on October 18 and even Cricket Australia (CA) included the mega event in its summer schedule. In the meantime, the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are at loggerheads, regarding the Asia Cup and the IPL. PCB chief executive Wasim Khan was clear cut in saying that the PCB won’t be compromising on the Asia Cup to accommodate the IPL.
Pakistan is looking to host the Asia Cup in either the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Sri Lanka. They are also planning to host the remaining PSL matches in November. The BCCI has asked the PCB to postpone the PSL matches until next year.
“Asia Cup will be a struggle this year. Going by the statement of the Chief Executive of the PCB, the window that suits them doesn’t suit India. Maybe they can postpone PSL next year if BCCI is able to open up a window during that period. Otherwise conducting the Asia Cup doesn’t seem too practical as these are challenging times,” an official was quoted as saying.
