Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought curtains to one of the most celebrated careers of Indian cricket with his retirement on 15th August. The post he shared on Instagram to confirm the same also ended the long term discussion of whether he should make a comeback or not. Dhoni faced a lot of criticism in his 16-year long career like all the big cricketers of this cricket-obsessed nation.
His value was judged a lot by the media and his potential to finish games was highly criticized during the latter part of his career. Dhoni was expected to come back during in the T20 World cup this year before it was called off due to the pandemic.
A lot of voice against his potential comeback was also raised as he didn’t play a single game in last one year. Finally, as he has retired, Nasser Hussain, the former English captain feels that now the Indian cricket will realize his importance.
MS Dhoni is the best white-ball captain there has ever been: Nasser Hussain
Hussain praised the former skipper’s calmness on the field. He also termed him as the best limited-overs captain of all time for India and Chennai Super Kings. The former English captain also applauded Dhoni for his impeccable glovework behind the stumps. Notably, Dhoni holds the record for highest stumpings in One-day Internationals.
“Quickest gloves in the world, the best finisher in the world and for me the best white-ball captain there has ever been, whether it be for Chennai or for India. The man was so cool, so calm under pressure,” Hussain said while sitting in the commentary box of ongoing England-Pakistan Test series.
He also mentioned that now is the time when Indian cricket will finally realize how important he was for the team. Dhoni gave up the captaincy in 2017 but was still playing till 2019 World Cup. He was often seen as a guiding force for Indian captain Virat Kohli. Also, his calls from behind the wicket whenever India opted for a ‘Decision review system’ was commendable.
“I think Indian cricket will only realise how good MS Dhoni was now that he has gone. Enjoy your retirement MS,” Hussain concluded.
