New Zealand and Australia were up against each other in the first T20 international of the five-match series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch and the hosts managed to stun the visitors as they scripted an outstanding victory by a whopping 53 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the T20I series. The 29-year-old Devon Conway emerged as the wrecker-in-chief for the Black Caps as he played a sublime knock of 99 runs off 59 deliveries including 10 boundaries and 3 maximums.
On the pitch where the other batsmen of the team failed to contribute positively to the scoreboard, Conway’s 99 runs helped the hosts in putting up a massive target of 184 runs on the board and giving Australia a run for their money. Owing to his scintillating performance with the willow, Devon was widely hailed and received a lot of praises and appreciation from all over the cricket fraternity.
India’s veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin also seemed impressed with Devon’s batting skills and lauded the batsman for the same. However, the Indian cricketer didn’t fail to take a humorous jibe on Conway for not producing such match-defining knocks before and making a case for himself in the IPL auction. Just like many other Kiwi cricketers, the 29-year-old had registered himself in the IPL auction 2021 for the upcoming 14th edition of T20 Extravaganza, hosted by BCCI on February 18 in Chennai.
Simon Doull takes a dig at IPL team managements
Despite registering his name at a base price of INR 50 lakhs, Devon had gone unsold in the auction. Pointing at the same, Ashwin tweeted, “Devon Conway is just 4 days late, but what a knock #AUSvNZ”
New Zealand renowned radio personality, commentator and former international cricketer Simon Doull took note of this tweet by Ashwin as commented that the IPL team managements have often overlooked NZ players for second rate Australian cricketers as after IPL, they just consider Australia’s domestic tournament Big Bash League as a competitive event.
“Not sure it matters @ashwinravi99 NZ players have continually been overlooked for second rate Australians in the IPL for years. Seems outside of IPL big bash is the only comp looked at.. #player #NZcricket,” tweeted Doull.
