Pakistan’s misery in Test cricket continued as they have now gone down to as low as No. 8 in the latest ICC Test rankings. Azhar Ali was appointed as the new Test skipper for the two-match Test series against Australia, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed. However, it didn’t make much of a difference as Pakistan lost both their matches in Brisbane and Adelaide by a margin of an innings.
West Indies have climbed to the seventh spot after their nine-wicket victory versus Afghanistan in Lucknow. Below Pakistan, are Bangladesh, who lost the Test series in India 2-0, and the newly crowned full members Afghanistan. Back in 2016, Pakistan became ICC’s number one Test team for the maiden time, toppling India. However, the team has gone into a slump ever since.
Pakistan lost 14 Tests in a row in Australia
Pakistan lost the Day-Night Test at the Adelaide Oval by an innings and 48 runs. Yasir Shah, Babar Azam and Shan Masood fought hard with the bat, but their efforts went in vain. David Warner raced his way to an unbeaten 335 after which Pakistan couldn’t find any way of making their way back into the encounter. The visitors lost the first Test at The Gabba by an innings and five runs.
Pakistan also lost 14 Tests on the trot in Australia, which also happens to be the worst losing streak on Australian soil. Moreover, the team made a horrendous start to their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship. It now remains to be see whether Pakistan are being able to make a comeback or not in their two-match home Test series against Sri Lanka later this month.
As far as the rankings are concerned, India held on to their position after their 2-0 win over the Tigers last month. Virat Kohli and Co have 360 points in the Test Championship, having won all their seven matches. New Zealand and England are second and third on the list. South Africa, who lost to India 3-0, are placed fourth. The Aussies are hanging in the fifth slot with Sri Lanka following them.
