The ICC World Cup 2019 final was probably one of the best nail biters in recent history as New Zealand and England played a tied match and then a tied the Super Over that was supposed to identify the winner. It all came down to a technicality based on, which England were crowned the World Champions and Kiwis were left to rue a couple of close moments.
One of those moments was Trent Boult taking Ben Stokes’ catch on the boundary and then stepping onto the ropes. And then the match turning instance in the last over of the English innings when Martin Guptill’s throw hit the bat of a diving Stokes and deflected for four overthrows getting the team 6 runs in all. These 12 runs changed the context of the match completely, which ended up on level terms.
England wins the trophy
The match went into the Super Over, England posted a score of 15 runs batting first with Stokes contributing 8 of those. New Zealand did their best with Jimmy Neesham making 13 runs and the team needed two off the last ball faced by Martin Guptill. The Kiwi opener turned back for the second run, but couldn’t make it when Buttler demolished the stumps and the home side was declared victors on basis of hitting more boundaries during the course of the match.
Many fans took to Twitter to criticize the ICC for their rule of deciding winners in case of a tie in the Super Over and amongst them was actor Paresh Rawal. Rawal, who is also a politician, had earlier taken the ICC to task when they had asked MS Dhoni to remove the army insignia from his keeping gloves after it created quite a row during the tournament. Rawal had then asked Dhoni to continue with the said gloves, and asked the ICC to go to hell.
Now he tweeted, “Instead of changing @msdhoni gloves, the stupid @ICC should have changed their super over rules.”

Earlier Gautam Gambhir had also taken the cricket’s governing body to task saying that he cannot fathom how an event of this magnitude can end with victors being decided on basis of some rule instead of what happened on the ground. He felt that the match should have been called a tie and trophy should have been shared.
