With Prithvi Shaw’s form with the bat showing absolutely no signs of improvement, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has called for his axing. Gavaskar’s comments came after Shaw failed in the second innings of the Adelaide Test. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings, the youngster managed to score just 4 in the second.
More than the low scores, it was the way he was dismissed is a matter of concern. In both the innings, he was bowled through the gates as Australia exposed his weakness against incoming deliveries. Questions were being raised over Shaw’s position in the playing eleven for the first Test and the opener has made only things worse for himself.
Shubman Gill was being widely backed to open the innings along with Mayank Agarwal after faring better than Shaw in the two tour games. While Shaw looked out of sorts in the testing batting conditions, Gill looked far more calm and composed. Gill, who is yet to make his Test debut, registered scores of 0, 29, 43 and 65 in the tour games. Shaw, on the other hand, registered scores of 0, 19, 40 and 3.
Team India, however, stuck with Shaw for the Adelaide Test as they handed the youngster another chance to prove himself. However, Shaw has squandered both the chances and Sunil Gavaskar has called for his exclusion. According to cricket journalist Vikrant Gupta, Gavaskar has said that Shaw has technical problem and should not play the next Test.
In his tweet, Gupta also stated that Gavaskar wants Gill to open the innings, writing: “Prithvi has technical problems, should be dropped in the next Test’ – Sunny bhai wants Shubman to open if he opens for his state Punjab (which he does)”

India all out for 36 runs
Talking about the Adelaide Test, Prithvi Shaw was not the only batsman who failed as India were all out for just 36 in the second innings. After taking a handy lead of 53, the Indian batsmen fell like a pack of cards in the second innings. 36 is now India’s lowest total in Tests. Not a single batsman managed to touch the double-digit mark during the disastrous display.
Mayank Agarwal’s 9 was the highest score. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood starred with the ball and picked up 5 wickets for just 8 runs. Pat Cummins impressed with the ball too and took four wickets.
