The league stage of Pakistan Super League 2020 is in the history books now as Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi emerged as the top four teams. Earlier, the tournament was supposed to have a playoffs format, however, because of the COVID-19 threat, the organizers replaced it with the semifinals format. But on Tuesday, ahead of the semi-finals, the tournament itself was called off.
The league stage entertained the fans a lot as the overseas stars from all over the world lit up the stadiums in Pakistan. Although a plethora of international stars left the competition because of Coronavirus, they still played a key role for their team in the early half of the tourney.
Here’s a look at the top 5 international performers of PSL 2020 league stage:
1. Chris Lynn – Lahore Qalandars
The reason why Lahore Qalandars made it to the semifinals of PSL 2020 is Chris Lynn. The dashing opener from Australia slammed a magnificent hundred in the team’s final league match against Multan Sultans to help them secure the third position on the points table. Unfortunately, Lynn also left after scoring the century in the final league game.
However, in the eight matches that he played for Qalandars, Lynn amassed 284 runs at a splendid average of 40.57. His strike rate of 179.74 shows that he decimated the opposition bowlers in the league stage.
The Aussie’s highest score in PSL 2020 was 113* while he also registered a half-century in the league stage. He ended the league round as the highest run-scorer among overseas players.
2. Imran Tahir – Multan Sultans
The star leg-spinner of PSL 2020 table-toppers, Imran Tahir finished the league stage as the highest wicket-taker from the foreign players. The South African player featured in 8 matches for the Sultans where he scalped 10 wickets. His economy rate of 7.75 shows that he did not give away runs easily.
As the pitches in Pakistan assisted the spin bowlers, Tahir enjoyed bowling in PSL 2020. Besides, he was born in Pakistan thus, he would have a good knowledge about the playing conditions.
Tahir could not bowl a maiden over in PSL 2020 but his best figures of 3/28 show that once he got going, he did not settle with just one wicket. The leg-spinner had a marvellous bowling average of 18.60 in 8 innings.
3. Ben Dunk – Lahore Qalandars
Another overseas player who played a vital role in Lahore Qalandars’ success was Chris Lynn’s compatriot, Ben Dunk. The left-handed wicket-keeper batsman who made a name for himself playing in the Big Bash League, won multiple games for Lahore Qalandars with his incredible batting performances.
He finished the league stage right behind Chris Lynn in the highest run-scorers’ charts. Besides, he batted in one inning lesser than Lynn still he crossed the 250 runs landmark.
Dunk aggregated 266 runs in 7 innings with his batting average being 53.20. Also, his strike rate of 186.01 was better than Lynn while he had the highest score of 99* in PSL 2020.
4. Samit Patel – Lahore Qalandars
The foreign players of Lahore Qalandars ruled the first round of PSL 2020 as this is the third entry from the Qalandars in this elite list. English all-rounder, Samit Patel, who had earlier been a part of the Marylebone Cricket Club squad that toured Pakistan, showcased his all-round talent playing for Lahore in PSL 2020.
Patel batted in 6 innings for the Qalandars, scoring 137 runs at an average of 34.25. His highest score was 71 and his strike rate was 155.68. The right-handed batsman remained unbeaten on two occasions.
With the ball, Samit picked up 9 wickets in 8 innings with his left-arm spin. The Englishman registered his best figures of 4/5 against the Quetta Gladiators. Lahore won that match by 8 wickets.
5. Luke Ronchi – Islamabad United
Despite taking up the role of New Zealand‘s fielding coach, Luke Ronchi proved that he has not aged at all and he can still represent his nation at the international level if needed. Ronchi was a part of the Islamabad United squad in PSL 2020 which failed to make it to the semifinals.
However, the Kiwi player finished in the top 5 of the highest run-scorers’ list with 266 runs in 8 innings. Ronchi had a brilliant strike rate of 156.47 while the right-handed batsman recorded two half-tons.
Ronchi even hit 31 fours and 9 sixes in the league stage. Thus, these were the top 5 international performers of the first round of Pakistan Super League 2020.
