The Tamil Nadu team management tried an innovative move by sending senior cricketer Ravi Ashwin at No.3 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Karnataka at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. Ashwin though could not score more than eight in 13 balls, but he caught the eyes for some other reason.
Ravi Ashwin wore a helmet sporting the logo of the BCCI and risked being fine by match referee Chinmay Sharma for doing so while playing in a domestic match. According to a BCCI official, it was the discretion of the match referee to fine Ravi Ashwin or not but conceded that rules are against those who violate the board’s clothing regulations.
“The clothing regulations clearly say that you have to tape the BCCI logo if you plan to use the same helmet in domestic matches as the one you wear while playing for India. The match referees, as well as players, have been briefed about the same over the years and if someone is guilty of committing the mistake, he can be fined by the referee,” India Today cited reports quoting the official as saying.
Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul didn’t do what Ravi Ashwin did
Among other India players who featured in the title clash that Karnataka won by 60 runs in VJD Method, Mayank Agarwal was seen wearing a helmet with the BCCI logo taped. KL Rahul, another Karnataka batsman, used a normal helmet without any logo on it. Both Agarwal and Rahul slammed unbeaten fifties to take the home team to a strong position before rain intervened. Karnataka’s solid reply of 146 for 1 in 23 overs against Tamil Nadu’s 252 was enough for them to win the crown at the end.
Earlier, Karnataka captain Manish Pandey won the toss and sent Dinesh Karthik’s side to bat first. The visitors were 224 for 5 in the 46th over when the collapse began and they lost their last five for just 28 runs with pacer Abhimanyu Mithun picking a hat-trick in the final over of the game. Mithun, who turned 30 on the same day, took five for 34 to become the first bowler to claim a hat-trick in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy.
