If there ever is an Indian Premier League ‘Hall of Fame’ for captains, Gautam Gambhir will be one of the earliest names on that list. The former Indian opener led Kolkata Knight Riders with aplomb between 2011-2017 and led them to two title-winning heists in 2012 and 2014. The former KKR captain, then jumped ship to his home team Delhi in 2018 bit couldn’t repeat his performances. He stepped down as the leader midway through the tournament.
But, if the reports are to be believed, the former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper and Indian opener, is set to buy stakes in the Delhi Capitals franchise. The southpaw is currently under talks with the GMR group, which boasts of 50 percent stakes into the Delhi-based franchise- Delhi Capitals.
According to the report published in TimesNow, Gambhir is believed to be in a formidable position in his negotiations with the GMR group and could well buy 10 percent stakes of the Capitals’ franchise for which he will reportedly play a whopping sum of Rs. 100 Crore. The deal is currently awaiting clearance from the Indian Premier League governing council before the final decision is locked in.
According to sources, as reported by Times Now, a formal announcement will be made once the agreement has been duly signed by both parties.
Delhi Capitals’ have been in the news for a variety of reasons
Half of the stakes of the Delhi Capitals are owned by JSW group, who had become the co-owners last year after playing a sum of Rs 550 Crores, and it was them who changed the name of the team from the erstwhile Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals; one that immediately paid dividends as the Shreyas Iyer-led unit made its way into the top-4 for the first time since 2011.
Speaking about the Delhi Capitals, the franchise who traded the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane in their set-up, are currently involved in a tussle with Priety Zinta co-owned- Kings Xi Punjab, for the rights to stage some of their host games at the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in the next edition.
The Kings XI Punjab too want to make the Ekana Stadium as their home ground as the owners are unhappy with the lack of crowds at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, and the final decision will be made following meetings between IPL governing council, Ekana group and the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association.
