Luck seems to have deserted Team India when it comes to injuries. The Indian team is already depleted for the ongoing Test series against Australia and is set to miss some key players for the crucial home series against England. The series will be their last in the ICC World Test Championship. The four-match series could very well decide whether India make it to the final of the inaugural championship or not.
But India might be compelled to play the series without some big names with their star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja looking highly unlikely to be available for the series. The southpaw is set to undergo an operation on his left thumb on Tuesday. He will need at least four-five weeks to start bowling, which makes him uncertain for the Tests against England starting on February 5.
Jadeja is currently sidelined after being hit on his thumb while batting in the first innings of the just-concluded third Test against Australia. Middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari, who played a brave knock to save the SCG Test, is also set to miss the series against England due to a hamstring tear. Earlier in the ongoing series, India lost the services of KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Umesh Yadav due to injuries.
India sweat on Bumrah, Ashwin
According to the New Indian Express, the Indian team-management is also sweating over the availability of Ravichandran Ashwin for the fourth and final Test against Australia starting in Brisbane on January 15. Ashwin, who starred with the bat in the SCG Test, is suffering from a back issue.
Meanwhile, in yet another blow, Jasprit Bumrah has been reportedly ruled out of the Brisbane Test due to abdominal strain. The fast-bowler is set to undergo a scan on Tuesday to determine the extent of his injury. Bumrah is also likely to be rested for at least a couple of Tests against England as India look to give their pace spearhead some much-needed rest.
With Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar set to make a return to the squad, India can afford to rest Bumrah, keeping his workload in mind. After failing to make the cut for the Australia tour due to injuries, both Ishant and Kumar have returned to action through the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s.
