The much-awaited film on India’s World Cup win in 1983 is likely to release in June this year. The movie was set for release last year itself but the lockdown across the whole country delayed its arrival. Even after things started getting back to normal slowly, the theatres weren’t opened fully. But with the Indian government’s latest directives of allowing 100% occupancy in theatres, some big-budget films including ’83 are set for release in coming months.
Cricket in India changed forever in 1983 when the Kapil Dev-led side scripted history. India won the World Cup for the first time beating the two-time champions and the star-studded West Indies side in the final at Lord’s. Since then, India have won two more World Cups, in 2011 in the 50-over format and in 2007 in T20Is. But the win in 1983 had paved the way for the massive fan following of the sport in the country.
And ’83 will depict the heroics of the team on the silver screen in June according to the reports in Bollywood Hungama.
Is June 25 the release date for ’83?
Some reports have also stated that the release date of the Kabir Khan directorial has been set for June 25 but the source has claimed that the makers are currently targetting the whole month and are yet to finalise the date. “There’s no truth to it (June 25 release date). The makers are looking at the whole month of June as of now. It might come on June 25 or it might come earlier,” the source said.
Another big-budget film Sooryavanshi is also likely to finalise its release date soon and the makers of ’83 are waiting for the same. Reports suggested last week that the Akshay Kumar starrer film is likely to go on floors in April and the official announcement is expected in a week or so.
As far as the star cast is concerned, ’83 will see Ranveer Singh donning the role of Kapil Dev while Deepika Padukone will be his wife. The likes of Tahir Raj Bhasin, Ammy Virk, Saqib Saleem, Hardy Sandhu, and Sahil Khattar among others play the role of the rest of the team members.
