Millions of hearts were broken when MS Dhoni was run-out in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. While his dismissal India’s hopes of making it to the final, it was also deemed to be the final international game of the veteran. But to everyone’s surprise, Dhoni is yet to announce his retirement and instead is on an extended sabbatical from the game.
Soon after the mega event, he made himself unavailable for the West Indies tour and served the Indian Army. He didn’t play the South Africa series as well and reportedly is not available for selection for the upcoming Bangladesh series too. There have been a lot of speculations going around his retirement and him playing the T20 World Cup next year.
However, the Indian Express has reported that the main reason behind MS Dhoni not playing after the World Cup has been his wrist and back injury.
Back has been troubling Dhoni since IPL
The report also states that the 38-year-old is carrying a troubled back since the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year. He was also seen taking treatment on his back during the tournament and had missed a game against the Mumbai Indians (MI) as well. The same injury aggravated during the World Cup and to make things worse, MS Dhoni also sustained a wrist injury.
There has been no official update from the BCCI regarding his injury or even his further availability. Surprisingly, Dhoni has gone completely out of the scene since the World Cup even as his fans wait for his comeback on the 22 yards. There were also reports of him waiting for Rishabh Pant to get ready for the T20 World Cup next year before calling it quits.
It remains to be seen now if the wicketkeeper-batsman will feature in the home series against the West Indies in December later this year. As far as the selectors and the captain Virat Kohli is concerned, retirement is something only an individual should decide on with the latter also welcoming Dhoni’s inputs if and when he’s available again.
