Apart from his duties for Team India on the cricket field, Rohit Sharma is also known for opining on various matter, regarding protection of wildlife. The 32-year-old Mumbai cricketer is known for supporting the conservation of rhinoceros. His work on rhinoceros started way back in 2015 when he first met Sudan- the last male Northern White African rhinoceros.
He was disconsolate after knowing that due to loss of habitat and climate change, and poaching, the species was nearing extinction. Sudan made a special place in his heart for the entire species. Since then, Rohit has shared his opinions on protection of wildlife and its importance. On September 22, he also dropped a tweet on the World Rhino Day, making people aware.
Recently, it has been learned that Rohit made a contribution of Rs 25 lakhs to WWF and Ol Pejeta as per reports in The Quint. Rohit’s relation with the organisations goes to such an extent that Ol Pejeta named a baby rhinoceros after the batter’s daughter Samaira, who was born last year. At that time, Rohit was in Australia and he missed the Sydney Test to attend her birth.
Rohit Sharma to open in Tests
Coming to his cricketing assignments, Rohit is set to open the batting in the three-match Test series versus South Africa. The opening game is set to get underway on October 2 in Visakhapatnam. The veteran was a part of the series in the West Indies as well, but he had to warm the benches. His spot in red-ball cricket has always been a debatable one despite his shows in white-ball cricket.
He last played Test cricket back in December 2018 versus Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Rohit has done reasonably at home conditions. However, he hasn’t quite been able to deliver the goods in countries like South Africa, Australia and England. In 2013, his ODI and T20I career revived after he was entrusted to open and he’ll be hoping for the same in Tests as well.
In the pre-match press conference, Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, said that the team management is ready to give Rohit time and space to settle into the format as an opener. Rohit got a duck in the warm-up match ahead of the Test series.
