Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim’s family was in for an embarrassment on Tuesday when his son knocked down a 24-year-old woman while driving near Kemp’s Corner Junction in South Mumbai, police claimed. The incident happened around 6:30 am when Saba’s 20-something son, Fidel, tried to overtake another vehicle and found the woman in front of his car.
Fidel, who was driving in the third lane, did his best to avoid a collision but it was too late. The woman was knocked down and got badly injured, Times Now quoted the police sources as saying.
The injured pedestrian was identified as Siddhi M and she was taken to Jaslok Hospital in an unconscious condition. She works as a housekeeping staff member at a gym at Pedder Road and was heading for her duty. She is currently undergoing treatment and the extent of her injuries was yet to be known. The police were waiting for her to regain consciousness to record the statement and initiate action against Fidel, who has been detained by officers of Gamdevi Police Station, it was added.
Saba Karim went to the police station
Saba, who is the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) GM, operations, later visited the police station in the evening to meet his son and talked to the officers. Speaking to India Today later, he said, “Nothing major has happened, I won’t be able to comment on the issue now.”
Gamdevi police officers said the victim’s husband Ajay Mandal, 23, filed the complaint. The couple reside in Premnagar, Worli. The officers said the sections applied were bailable and the police station could release Fidel on a personal bond.
The 52-year-old Saba Karim, who played for India between 1997 and 2000, appeared in one Test and 34 ODIs. He scored 377 runs with one international fifty which had come in his debut ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein in 1997. Saba’s cricketing career was cut short after he suffered a bad injury to his eyes while keeping in the only Test he played in Dhaka against Bangladesh. He also played 120 first-class and 124 List-A games.
