Sachin Tendulkar, the legendary Indian cricketer, is set to come out of retirement to face Australian women’s fast bowler Ellyse Perry. The epic face-off will take place during the Big Appeal double-header at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Sunday, February 9. Tendulkar will be taking part in the Bushfire Bash charity game as the coach of the team, captained by Aussie great Ricky Ponting.
Perry will be bowling to Tendulkar in the mid-innings break of Australia women’s T20I against England Women in the tri-series, also involving India. On Saturday, the New South Wales-born Perry challenged Sachin for an over, sounding excited about bowling to the Master Blaster.
Perry challenges Sachin
“Hey Sachin, it’s awesome to have you out here in Australia supporting the Bushfire match,” Perry was quoted as saying in a video on Twitter. “I know you’re coaching one of the teams but a few of us were sitting around last night chatting and we thought it would be absolutely amazing to see you potentially come out of retirement for one over in the innings break,” she added.
Tendulkar didn’t take much time in responding to Perry and he accepted the challenge, replying, “Sounds great Ellyse.” Sachin said that he has a shoulder injury and he would be taking the field against the advice of his doctor.
“I would love to go out there and bat an over (much against the advice of my doctor due to my shoulder injury). Hope we can generate enough money for this cause, and to get me out there in the middle,” Sachin mentioned.
As far as Perry is concerned, the 29-year-old has arguably been one of the greatest all-rounders in women’s cricket to have played the game. Even in the ongoing tri-series, she has been able to stamp her authority, With the bat in hand, she has scored 80 runs in three games at an average of 26.67.
She was at her best in Australia’s second match against India at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Perry was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round show. He churned out a spell of 4-0-13-4, restricting India for 103. In the run-chase, she notched 49 off 47 and saw her team over the line.
