The rumours of MS Dhoni’s retirement spread like wildfire across social media on Thursday. It all started when India skipper Virat Kohli posted a photo of himself and Dhoni on Twitter. The tweet made many speculate that it was a tribute by Kohli for his illustrious predecessor. One cannot really blame the fans for those speculations as Kohli’s tweet was out of the blue.
While the entire cricketing world is busy speculating about Dhoni’s imminent retirement, Kohli’s photo, as well as the caption, further added fuel to the fire. The photo was of India’s famous win over Australia in the 2016 T20 World Cup. Kohli’s tweet undoubtedly had all the elements of a tribute. It was a strange tweet from Kohli since there was no special occasion to post that message. Thus, the fans that it was all over for Dhoni in international cricket.
But just a few hours later, Sakshi Dhoni, wife of the former India skipper, aptly explained the whole scenario through her tweet. With the speculations getting out of hands, Sakshi took to Twitter to respond to them and the fans must have enjoyed it. Sakshi poured cold water on all the retirement rumours, writing, “Its called rumours.”

MSK Prasad quashes rumours
Later in the day, India’s chief selector MSK Prasad also rubbished the rumours, saying that he has not heard anything from Dhoni. Prasad, on Thursday evening, announced India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against South Africa and spoke on the rumours, “No, absolutely not. I am really surprised to hear that,” said Prasad when asked about the rumours.
Having last played for India in the World Cup, Dhoni is currently out of action. Soon after the completion of the tournament, the veteran star took a two-month sabbatical from cricket and made himself unavailable for the limited-overs series against West Indies and South Africa. During the World Cup too, rumours came out about Dhoni’s future, suggesting that the legendary cricketer would announce his retirement after the completion of the tournament.
