The Indian team that won the World Cup in 1983 not only created history at the Lord’s Cricket Ground but also changed the tide of the game in the country. Having entered the tournament as truly an underdog, the Indian team led by 24-year-old Kapil Dev triumphed against favourites and 2-time winners West Indies, led by Clive Lloyd beating all odds to lift the Prudential World Cup above their heads, sending the country into ecstasy.
Several players from the team that went in to play that tournament have admitted that they were treating the trip as a vacation and didn’t think that they would even make it to the semis. However, once they defeated the mighty West Indies in their first league match and gradually built confidence up. 36 years later when the cricketers are paid in crores, the salary of the players who played the final at Lord’s is a surprising figure.
The 1983 World Cup winners were paid a sum of Rs. 200/day as allowance and Rs. 1500 as match fees per game. Makrand Waigankar, a renowned journalist shared the picture of the team sheet as well as their salaries along with that of the team manager Bishen Singh Bedi.
In contrast to that, the 2011 World Cup-winning team was showered with both cash rewards and real estate rewards. Each member received around Rs. 2 crores from the BCCI and then the respective states associations and governments also presented them with further awards.
In compassion, even the Indian team which lost in the finals of the 2003 World Cup also received at least Rs. 7 million each from BCCI and sponsorship deals during the tournament and then also received many rewards from the government on return.
The Men in Blue ended up as semi-finalists in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2019, which was won by England. The International Cricket Council (ICC) splashed out a huge amount of their money for all the participating teams, the top four teams as well as the winner.
