Sanjay Manjrekar, the former Indian cricketer, has put forth a time which he reckons should be appropriate for starting the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The COVID-19 has made sure that the start of the tournament has already been postponed once from March 29 to April 15. But with the 21-day lockdown in place, more doubts have been cast over the T20 league.
The visas of the foreigners have been cancelled by the Indian government in the situation of crisis. There have also been talks of conducting the IPL without the foreign players. The 54-year-old Manjrekar feels that the IPL should be getting underway soon after the green signal from the concerned authorities.
IPL is more than about just Dhoni or Kohli: Sanjay Manjrekar
The veteran feels that the IPL has a lot at stake for a number of people, who are earning their livelihood through the tournament. If the IPL gets cancelled, then the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could end up incurring massive losses.
“The moment we get clearances from all the authorities that matter, the IPL should happen, only because it will kick start the economy because when you talk about the IPL it’s not just about the Mumbai Indians, or a Dhoni or a Virat Kohli, there are a lot of people who are making their livelihood through the IPL,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying during a show on Star Sports.
Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were set to lock horns in the opening match of the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Not only the IPL, but other sporting events have also been called off due to the massive coronavirus outbreak. In India, there have more than 3,300 cases with the virus accounting for the lives of 77 people thus far.
In the entire world, the coronavirus cases have gone above 12,00,000 and the numbers aren’t showing signs of slowing down. In order to stay spirited in the glum time, Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, have tried his heart out. A couple of days ago, he said that the citizens of the country should light candles on April 5 to thank the doctors, who have been working hard.
