Pakistan is one of the few teams who are yet to play their first match after the conclusion of the 2019 World Cup. After the mega event, the ICC got the Test championship underway from 1 August 2019. Currently, Pakistan is ranked on 7th position out of the 12 Test-playing nations and are still to open their account in the Test Championship.
After a disappointing World Cup campaign, PCB has changed the coaching staff and named their best person in the ranks Misbah-ul-Haq to take Pakistan cricket forward. The skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed is confident of putting on a good show with the new changes in the team. The 32-year-old has led his national squad on 13 occasions in the whites out of which the team registered four wins and faced eight defeats.
Pakistan has been indulged in not so good performances in the last 2 years because of which they find themselves in the lower half of the top 10 rankings. The drastic drop in their performance came when senior players like Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan signed off from the Test cricket.
We are in a rebuilding process in Tests
According to Pakistan skipper, his team can do well in the longest format now as the players are settled and know their roles and responsibilities. “We need to work on our bowling now and we have a couple of exciting pacers to look at and find some spinners. I think we are now in a position to do well in the Test format which now has more meaning and purpose and every match is important,” Sarfaraz Ahmed was quoted as saying by TOI.
“We have struggled after losing Misbah and Younis and we are in a rebuilding process. But now I think our batsmen are ready to fill the gaps and take responsibility, have Shaan Masood, Imam-ul-Haq, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail and Babar Azam who have now gone through the grind and can do well at the Test level. There is also a lot of experience now behind Azhar and Asad,” Sarfaraz added.
Sarfaraz Khan’s first assignment will be a tour to Australia in November where they play two Tests followed by home Test series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
