International Cricket Council (ICC) is receiving a lot of flak ever since the World Cup 2019 final has concluded. It was the greatest ODI ever played and despite fighting until the end and scoring the same runs as England did, New Zealand had to come second. No team deserved to lose the final on the day but the hosts triumphed on the basis boundary count and the fans are fuming at the governing body for the same.
After opting to bat first, the Kiwis posted a competitive total of 241 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets after 50 overs. In response, England were reduced to 86/4 before Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler joined hands to stitch a game-changing partnership. The duo added 110 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was holed out and the pendulum swung yet again.
It went down to the last over and more drama unfolded with Stokes’ bat deflecting the ball to the boundary. The match ended in a tie soon after that and even the super over tied with both the teams scoring 15 runs each. But England had hit 26 boundaries in the match and in the super over compared to New Zealand’s 17 and they were crowned the champions.
Fans question absurd rules
As soon as England won the match, the fan started to question the rules and the ICC. In a low-scoring game where only 482 runs were scored and 18 wickets fell, New Zealand had bowled much better (in terms of picking wickets). Also, the extras conceded by England were 30 compared to the Kiwis’ 17 which should’ve also been taken into consideration.
Many also thought the trophy should’ve been shared with even the likes of Rohit Sharma stating that the rules in cricket should be seriously looked into. Meanwhile, the outrage after New Zealand doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon as #shameonICC is trending on Twitter at the moment. The fans are lashing out at the governing body and more news coming that the on-field umpires made a clear mistake might make it worse for ICC.
Here are some of the tweets:
What if both teams had equal nubmer of boundaries?
Winner would have been decided by measuring the weight of Captain?? 😂😂#shameonicc

Any nation other New Zealand would have gone for hunger strike for such #ICCRules.
NZ took more wickets, played less dot balls n that overthrow is still a controversy for me.
It Just reminds me NZ have been the most professional and well behaved Cricket team ever.#shameonicc

Very poor #ICCRules
1. In 50 over matches they imposed 20 overs rule. Why not Test match rule of declaring it draw?
2. Superover must be at least 3 overs each in 50 over matches.
3. Why only more no. of boundaries & not no. of dot balls and wickets considered?
