The last year or so has been tough for Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The southpaw lost his place from the Test team after the tour of England. Back in June, he scored a century versus Australia in the World Cup, but a thumb fracture ruled him out of the rest of the mega event. Then he came back to play the ODI and T20I series against the West Indies and he couldn’t do well.
In five innings, the left-hander could only manage 65 runs. The Delhi-born is next set to be a part of the T20I series against South Africa, scheduled to get underway on September 15. Amidst his commitments for the national team, he recently turned up for the India ‘A’ team in the series versus South Africa ‘A’. In both games, he managed to end with scores of 52 and 51.
Dhawan now believes that the ‘A’ series can work as decent preparation before the series versus the Proteas. He understands that he isn’t in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket in concerned and put forth the importance of making optimum utilization of the breaks he gets.
Shikhar Dhawan wants to keep performing consistently
“I’m not in the Test side. So, I get enough breaks. There’s nothing like playing a game and being on the ground. The more matches you play, the better you get. After seeing my workload and everything, I felt I had enough off days and thought I could play these two matches. This is good preparation for me before a series,” Dhawan was quoted as saying in The Times of India (TOI).
Most importantly, Dhawan has set his eyes on the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia. He wishes keep contributing for the team, scoring runs in heaps. “I’m looking forward to the T20 World Cup, to scoring a lot of runs for the Indian team and keep performing consistently,” he added.
The 33-year-old Dhawan has also enjoyed playing alongside the junior players in the India ‘A’ team. “These boys have been doing very well. I am a fun-loving boy. I can mingle with everyone. We laugh together, have dinner together. On the field, whatever knowledge I have gained over the years, I try to pass on to them,” he stated.
