Team India won the opening ODI of the three-match series against England in Pune on Tuesday. They defeated the opposition by 66 runs and will be looking to seal the series in the second game itself which will be played on March 26. However, ahead of the encounter, the hosts have been dealt with a huge blow as their number four batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series.
Iyer fell on his left shoulder while attempting to stop a shot from England opener Jonny Bairstow and was in extreme pain. He left the field soon and didn’t come back. Later, BCCI provided an update on his injury stating that he has subluxated his shoulder and was taken for scans as well.
The BCCI sources have already confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has not only been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series but he will also not play the first few matches for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021. The DC skipper might also require surgery and in that case, Iyer could be out of action for two months.
“In medical terms, subluxation of shoulder means partial dislocation and can be fixed in two-three weeks, but that would mean risk of reoccurrence. If the scans are not good, one requires surgery too, which means two months off,” a sports medical expert was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Suryakumar Yadav to get debut?
Meanwhile, Surykumar Yadav might make his ODI debut now in Shreyas Iyer’s absence. He shone in the preceding T20I series earlier this month as well slamming Jofra Archer for a six off the ball he faced in international cricket. Surya smashed a half-century and backed it up with a crucial 32 in the deciding T20I.
If not Surya, India have Rishabh Pant as well in the reserves who didn’t make it to the XI for the first ODI against England. With Rohit Sharma also not yet cleared to play in the next game, both Pant and Surya might end up playing in the middle-order come March 26.
