Shubman Gill is certainly one of India’s future stars and the unbelievably consistent batsman in domestic cricket has made the headlines yet again. In the just-concluded Deodhar Trophy, the 20-year-old made a big hundred for India ‘C’, the side he captained, and although he failed to score more than one in the final against India ‘B’, Shubman has eclipsed a decade-old record held by none other than current India captain Virat Kohli.
Shubman became the youngest captain ever to lead a team in the Deodhar Trophy final the moment he went out for toss against India ‘B’ at the JSCA International Complex in Ranchi on Monday. Previously, Kohli led North Zone in the final of the elite tournament in 2009-10 at the age of 21 years and 142 days. Shubman was 20 days and 57 days old when he captained his side in the same tournament.
Captain Shubman Gill, however, could not win Deodhar Trophy
Shubman, however, could not win the trophy as his side went down fighting against Parthiv Patel’s team by 32 runs. Chasing 284 in 50 overs, India ‘C’ were left reeling at 77 for 5 with the captain falling for a solitary run. Kedar Jadhav scored 86 for India ‘B’ while Priyam Garg made 74 for India ‘C’ but did not get enough support from his teammates. Kohli had better luck in the Deodhar Trophy final in 2009-10 as the North Zone had won the final then against West Zone by 49 runs.
Shubman, who has played two ODIs so far without much success, was in impressive form in the recent games for India ‘A’ against South Africa ‘A’ at home. He scored two back-to-back 90s in two first-class games. He got his maiden Test call in the recently played series against the Proteas that India won 3-0. Shubman, however, did not feature in any of the matches.
Shubman, who plays for Punjab in first-class games, made his debut in 2017 and in just 15 matches so far, he has picked up four hundreds and averages almost 70. The cricketer has also made a mark in the T20 format through his adaptive technique in the Indian Premier League.
