The vice-captain of India Women’s T20I team Smriti Mandhana has been told to stay in home quarantine in Sangli amid Coronavirus fears in the district. Sangli has been one of the most affected districts in Maharashtra. As many as 25 members from the same family from Islampur city in Sangli were found positive a couple of days ago which has led to the officials taking extreme measures.
Smriti was recently in Australia and played in the Women’s T20 World Cup. India made it to the final on March 8 which was played at the iconic MCG in front of more than 84,000 people. Soon after this game, the Coronavirus took centrestage and all cricketing events across the world were cancelled.
Meanwhile, the Indian team returned from Australia a couple of days after the final. However, Smriti Mandhana stayed in Mumbai and only came back home to Sangli on March 23, the same day when the India PM Narendra Modi annnounced a 21-day lockdown.
These are precuationary steps, says Sangli MNC’s Health officer
The Health officer of the Sangli Municipal Corporation (MNC) Dr Ravindra Tate confirmed the news of Smriti Mandhana being told to be in home quarantine. He also stated that these are just precautionary steps as she had returned from abroad while also came back from Mumbai last week when the Coronavirus had already started to spread.
“Yes, we told Smriti Mandhana to stay in home quarantine on March 25. We are also keeping an update on her health on a daily basis. Amid Coronavirus pandemic, we are taking these precautionary steps. The health of the people in home quarantine is being checked by the doctors daily here,” he said according to local newspaper Pudhari.
As far as the positive cases of Coronavirus in India is concerned, the number has raised to 1263 while in Maharashtra, the count has gone up to 238. 10 people have lost their lives in the state even as the number of the deceased in the country has reached 32. The Government recently confirmed that India hasn’t reached the community transmission stage yet.
