There have been a lot of commotion surrounding MS Dhoni over the last few days. The veteran didn’t have the greatest of outings in the 2019 World Cup. Talks regarding whether he should announce his retirement or not are also doing the rounds. The 38-year-old is presently on a two-month break from cricket and recently had the privilege of serving the Indian Army.
He holds the honorary Lieutenant Colonel rank in the territorial army and served the battalion from July 31 to August 15. It goes without saying that he is at the fag end of his cricketing career, and it’s seems like a matter of time before Dhoni bids adieu. In the meantime, Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricketer, shared his opinions over the Jharkhand-born keeper’s future.
We will have to wait and see, says Ganguly
“To be honest, I don’t know. It depends on the way the team management thinks, the way the selectors think. Obviously, Dhoni is not young anymore, so this decision comes in everybody’s life at some stage or the other. So, we will have to wait and see for another three or four months to understand where it goes,” Ganguly was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with Sportstar.
Dhoni, who made his international debut in 2004 under Ganguly’s leadership, has been communicated that he won’t be India’s first choice keeper going ahead. Rather, Rishabh Pant, the 21-year-old from Uttarakhand, will be preferred. As per Ganguly, things rest on the mindset of the selectors and whether they wish to invest in the future or not.
“Obviously, Rishabh (Pant) is in. He plays well. (But in the end), it all depends on the mindset of the selectors and what they think. It’s about whether they want to look at the future. Only time will tell,” Ganguly, one of India’s greatest captains, mentioned.
Pant made his T20I debut back in 2017 and his Test and ODI debut came last year. The southpaw was a part of the World Cup squad after Shikhar Dhawan got ruled out. He is currently in the West Indies, taking part in the opening Test at the North Sound in Antigua.
