Not very long ago when the Indian cricketing fraternity was busy guessing who would be the new head coach, a number of fans had expressed their desire of seeing Sourav Ganguly at that post. Incumbent Ravi Shastri’s contract was set to end after the tour of West Indies and the BCCI had started the process of coach selection before that.
Eventually, Shastri managed to retain his post. The former India allrounder has pipped the likes of Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput to remain India’s head coach. Shastri’s current contract will come to an end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in 2021. One can now expect Sourav Ganguly to throw his hat in the ring when the BCCI look for the next head coach.
The former India skipper, who does not like to beat around the bush, has dropped yet another hint on coaching the current Indian team. While Ganguly did not sound too excited, he made it clear that the job does interest him. The legendary batsman currently has his plate full. He is the president of Cricket Association of Bengal, mentor of Delhi Capitals, hosts a Bengali quiz show and also does commentary occasionally.
“Let one coach finish, then we will think about the other coach,” Ganguly told reporters on the sidelines of Tata Steel Kolkata 25K launch. “In any case, I am already a coach. I look after the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. In my first season last year, they did well. They went to the semifinals from being last for last seven years so it’s been good,” he added.
Interested in coach’s job
This is not the first time, Sourav Ganguly spoke on his chances of becoming the India coach. In the past too, he had expressed his desire of taking the lucrative job. Around a month ago, Ganguly had confirmed that he would apply for the post in the future.
“Currently, I’m associated with too many things — IPL, CAB, TV commentary. Let me complete this. But I will definitely put my hat at some stage. Provided I get selected. But definitely, I’m interested. Not now but in the future,” Ganguly had earlier said when the hunt was on to find the new Indian head coach.
Ganguly is one of the finest batsmen to have played for India although he is remembered more for his fearless captaincy. He is already a fan-favorite and there is little denying that the fans would absolutely love to see him become the coach of the team.
