With Steve Smith making a stunning comeback to Test cricket, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has opened up on who is the best player in the world at the moment. For the last one year, Virat Kohli was the popular choice as the best in the world as Smith was serving the 12-month ban. However, things have changed quickly after his brilliant performance in the just-concluded Ashes.
While Smith remained away from Tests for more than a year, it did not affect his form at all as he tore apart England. By the time the Ashes came to an end, he had scored 774 runs in just 7 innings. The tally is his highest-ever in a series. Smith could have scored much more had he not missed three innings due to a delayed concussion. His performance helped Australia retain the Ashes for the first time in England since 2001.
In seven innings, Steve Smith scored two centuries, a double century and three half-centuries. Riding on those performances, he also reclaimed the number one rank in Tests. Smith was at the top from 2015 to 2018 before Kohli replaced him after his ban.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, was busy playing in the Caribbeans at the same time. But unlike Smith, he did not have a prolific Test series. The India skipper scored two fifties in two Tests. But prior to that, he had scored centuries in both the ODIs.
How does it matter?
With both Kohli and Smith showing absolutely no signs of stopping, Sourav Ganguly has given his verdict. The legendary skipper said that the Indian captain is still the best player in the world and also lauded Smith’s phenomenal numbers.
“These are questions not to be answered. How does it matter? It’s about performance. Virat is the best in the world at the moment. So that’s what makes us happy. Smith’s records speak for itself… 26 Test hundreds which is a phenomenal record,” Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by a newspaper.
