South Africa captain Faf du Plessis managed to salvage some pride for himself and his team after defeating England in the first Test in Centurion by 107 runs. The Proteas picked their first points in the ICC Test Championship because of this win and after the recent 0-3 hammering that they got in India, it brought captain du Plessis a big relief.
And after winning the first match, du Plessis criticised the idea of a Super Series involving four top sides that has been floated by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly, when asked about it. He did it while speaking to the media after South Africa’s win over England on Saturday.
Ganguly recently floated the idea whereby he said the top three sides — India, Australia and England — will feature in the tournament while the fourth team will be picked on a revolving basis. The proposal saw a mixed reaction. While the cricket boards of England and Australia found weight in it, a number of voices, including that of du Plessis, felt otherwise. The critics of the idea had to say that the Super Series will only promote a few teams while leaving others isolated.
Faf du Plessis points out at irregularity in number of Tests countries play
The 35-year-old Faf du Plessis said there was already a lot of cricket last year involving the top three. According to him, it would be wise to include more teams as it will help the game grow in other regions of the world. He also pointed out the irregularity in the number of Tests nations play, with newcomers like Ireland and Afghanistan not getting as many big-format games as some others.
“The last year or so you can see what’s going on in terms of the big three countries,” du Plessis said. “There’s a lot of movement going towards that, a lot more matches being played against the top three, or big three. It’s probably better if you include more teams, the better to grow the game as much as you can,” he added.
Du Plessis will be leading South Africa in the second Test against England which starts in Cape Town on January 3. The Tests will be followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is in February.
