The Proteas team is in the look for the appointment of a new convenor of selection before they declare their captain for the Test squad. However, in the latest turn of developments, the head coach of the team, Mark Boucher, has declared that it will not be Quinton de Kock, who is captaining their limited-overs squad. Boucher stated that they are planning to follow the model currently used by Australia and England.
The model proposes different captains for different formats of the game. It will be a change for the team from the situation when Faf du Plessis captained South Africa in all three formats. Having different skippers for different format gives the player time to come up with their respective plans. The team is planning a lot to come up with someone different.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations and a lot of time to think about what we want to do. We’ll look to select someone else for the Test role. One of the things that we’ve learned from England is a guy like Eoin Morgan comes in, and he’s got a lot of time to plan because he’s not involved in the Test team,” said Boucher as quoted by India Today.
Quinton de Kock not in mood to lead the Test side
Boucher even revealed that De Kock is not in the mood to take up the charge for Test as he feels the pressure is going a little high on him. Even Boucher feels when a person has the charge for too many things, he gets burdened and doesn’t get on to things well in time.
“So that’s positive, you get a captain who can sit down and really plan what he wants and how to drive that vision to the players. It gives you some freshness when there’s a short turnaround between formats. The last conversation I had with Quinny around this topic was in India (in March), where he felt the workload was going to be a little high for him,” Boucher added.
Boucher concluded by adding that whoever gets to lead the team in Test will make good use of De Kock because a keeper has a good sense to see the game from behind the wickets.
