Cricket scenario has suffered huge losses due to Coronavirus. Each and every tournament and series have been postponed indefinitely. Now, South Africa tour of Sri Lanka has also been added to that list. It was scheduled to take place in the first half of June.
It is not just cricket but the other sports have also been dealt with a major blow. A global sports event like Olympics was scheduled to begin from June but it was also adjourned to the next year due to the same reason. BCCI was also forced to postpone Indian Premier League 2020– the biggest T20 league in the world– for an indefinite period until the situation returns to its state of normalcy.
South Africa were scheduled to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is
South Africa were scheduled to go on a tour to Sri Lanka for playing three ODIs and as many T20Is in the first half of June. But now, it has been postponed until further notice. Jacques Faul, the Cricket South Africa acting chief executive said that it was very sad and hard to take such a strong step but they were left with no option in their hands. He also added that the tour will be rescheduled as soon as the cricket returns to normalcy.
Faul said that the players have not got the appropriate time to prepare for the tour to Sri Lanka due to the ongoing lockdown in the country. Moreover, the life concern of the players was an added reason that forced CSA to come onto the decision of postponement of the tour.
“It is very sad that we have been forced to take this step and we will re-schedule the tour as soon as cricket returns to a sense of normality and our international fixture list allows. Our Proteas would not have been able to prepare properly taking our own lockdown situation into account and, more importantly, health considerations for our players, which are always paramount, were the over-riding factor,” Jacques Faul said as quoted by Cricket South Africa.
